Open-Xchange Groupware Available via Macs and iPhone

Open-Xchange, the leading provider of open source groupware, today announced availability of two software extensions which enable native Mac applications to be used with Open-Xchange and the iPhone to access Open-Xchange groupware.

Now, data and groupware information stored on Open-Xchange can be accessed on Macs, or the AJAX-based web interface, or by using Microsoft Outlook on PCs, or virtually any smartphone.

With OXtender for MacOS X, end users can access and edit all information and documents stored on the Open-Xchange server with their familiar desktop Mac applications. This makes Open-Xchange e-mails, appointments, contacts, tasks and documents available to end users through their Mac applications — Mail, iCal and Addressbook. Even without a connection to the Internet, users can continue to work without interruption. When connected the next time, changes on the Mac and Open-Xchange Server will be synchronized immediately.

In addition, with OXtender for Mobile Web all mobile devices connected to the Mac — like iPhones, iPods and cell phones from other manufacturers, as well as software from third-party ISVs that support iSync — will now have access to Open-Xchange data. Plus, users of Apple´s MobileMe will receive new e-mail, calendar and contact entries by the “over the air” push service to their iPhone.

And, if customers do not use Apple`s push services, Open-Xchange now offers end customers online access to their appointments, contacts and tasks while on the road using their smartphones. Now, users can access a phone number in their Open-Xchange contacts and click on it from the smartphone to initiate a call. OXtender for Mobile Web uses the standard web browser on their smartphone and is optimized for mobile devices such as Apple´s Safari on the iPhone.

“The integration of Open-Xchange with native Mac applications means that users can access and edit all relevant information without changing their familiar desktop environment,” said Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange. “The addition of Macs and iPhones makes Open-Xchange groupware the ideal solution for organizations using various types of end user systems and devices.”

Key features of OXtender for Mac OS X software are:
Synchronization of contacts between Open-Xchange and the Apple Addressbook;
Synchronization of appointments and tasks between Open-Xchange and iCal;
Open-Xchange’s document sharing module, the InfoStore, can be linked via WebDav to Apple’s file manager, Finder;
Automatic configuration of Apple’s Mail Client to get access to Open-Xchange Mail Services;
Automatic synchronization with all connected services and devices, for example MobileMe, iPhone, iPod, smartphones and cell phones of other manufacturers with support for iSync.

OXtender for Mac OS X and OXtender for Mobile Web are available now at no extra cost for all Open-Xchange users. The software extensions can be used with on-premise solutions, Open-Xchange Server Edition and Open-Xchange Appliance Edition, as well as Open-Xchange Hosting Edition, which is available through large service providers, such as 1&1 Internet, NameCheap, and Network Solutions.
